The Trouble with Sweetheartz

If it were anyone else calling, Jamie would not have heard the phone ring. But it’s Micah, his ex-girlfriend, whom he hasn’t spoken to in six months, and things did not end well between them. She needs a ride home from Florida, almost ten hours away from their hometown. Jamie would like to hang up the phone, roll over, and pretend her call was a dream, but for some reason, one he is unable to identify, he can’t go back to sleep. That is the problem, and his way of solving it—perhaps the only way to confront his past and his feelings and who he has become—is to go after her. On a rollicking midnight ride from small-town Tennessee to Daytona Beach and back, Jamie turns over his relationship with Micah, with his friends, and even God, as he tries to do the right thing and save her. One last time.

Praise for The Trouble with Sweetheartz

“Much like the track marks on Micah’s arm, everyone has a romantic relationship in life that they can’t seem to shake. Author Lukas Tallent navigates the idea of unrequited love through a road trip that forces the main character, Jamie, to figure out what his attachment to his ex-girlfriend is supposed to look like post breakup. By weaving past with present, The Trouble with Sweetheartz presents an excellent rumination about how our histories with one another shape feelings and cause damage to our future selves when we cannot separate who we were with what we’ve become. A cautionary tale of nostalgia’s effect on romance, Sweetheartz straps the reader into the front seat of a Florida fever dream and basks in the terrible feelings of encountering an ex you’re not quite over.”
